Ardent Spirits Acquires Chapter 7 Whisky After Liquidation, Expands Scotch Portfolio
Ardent Spirits, the Scotland-based independent bottler and owner of Dark Matter Distillers, has purchased Chapter 7 Whisky after the company entered liquidation. The deal strengthens Ardent’s growing portfolio and reinforces its ambition to scale within the global whisky market.
This acquisition comes at a time of significant change in the whiskey industry. Earlier this month, several major producers faced similar challenges and restructuring moves. For example, MGP Ingredients reported a sharp decline in whiskey sales amid global and domestic headwinds and Molson Coors wrote down $75 million in value tied to its Blue Run Spirits brand. Together, these developments highlight how both established distillers and emerging independents are adapting to shifting consumer demand and market pressures.
Chapter 7’s Financial Struggles
On October 2, 2025, Kevin Mapstone and Kenneth Craig from Begbies Traynor were appointed as liquidators for Chapter 7. The bottler suffered from declining global demand and a drop in discretionary spending. Its 2022 bottling facility investment also strained cash flow, creating mounting financial pressure.
According to Begbies Traynor, the sale of Chapter 7’s intellectual property and brand assets was made to a “sector specialist.” That buyer has since been revealed as Ardent Spirits.
Strategic Growth for Ardent
For Ardent, this purchase marks a strategic expansion of its operations. The company acquired Dark Matter Distillers, Scotland’s first rum distillery, in December 2024. Now, with Chapter 7 under its umbrella, Ardent aims to rebuild the whisky label and expand its footprint in both whisky and rum categories.
Selim Evin, who founded Chapter 7 in 2014, has joined Ardent’s senior leadership team. He will help guide brand storytelling, market growth, and distribution partnerships. “Joining Ardent presents an opportunity to preserve Chapter 7’s legacy while amplifying it,” Evin said.
Plans for a 2026 Relaunch
Ardent intends to relaunch Chapter 7 globally in 2026, introducing new bottlings and collaborative releases with select Scottish distilleries. The company also plans to develop visitor experiences and expand digital storytelling to engage a wider global audience.
In addition, Ardent will launch a ready-to-drink (RTD) range for Dark Matter Rum next year. These efforts align with the company’s focus on innovation and consumer engagement across multiple spirits categories.
New Investment and Expansion
Ardent has invested in a new bottling hall in Banchory, Scotland, to increase production capacity and meet new packaging contracts. This facility will help the company scale its independent bottling operations and support growth across its brands.
A company spokesperson said, “The acquisition of Chapter 7 represents a perfect alignment of craftsmanship, creativity, and ambition. Despite challenging economic headwinds, Chapter 7 has built an extraordinary reputation among whisky connoisseurs.”
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
